How to Extract an Acapella (Isolated Vocals) From a Song on iPhone
An acapella is the vocal track on its own. On iPhone you can pull it out of a finished song with AI stem separation, no studio files needed. This guide uses Riftone, the app we make, and is honest about what the result is and is not.
Step by step
- Import the trackOpen the Import tab and add the song from iTunes (songs bought and downloaded to the phone), Files, a URL, a recording or your camera roll. Streaming-only songs are copy-protected and cannot be imported.
- Let Riftone separate itThe AI splits the track into six stems. The Library shows it as separating, then ready.
- Open the song in the editorYou see one control per stem: Vocals, Drums, Bass, Guitar, Piano and Other.
- Isolate the vocalsMute every stem except Vocals, or just solo-listen to it. If Riftone shows that no vocals were detected, the track is probably instrumental.
- Trim to the part you need (optional)Use Trim to keep only a verse or chorus, for example for a remix or a sample.
- Export the acapellaIn Export choose Separated tracks to save the Vocals stem as its own file, or Audio mix to export what you currently hear with the other stems muted. Lossless WAV is available on iPhone (M4A is the default).
Free to download. Separating your own songs needs a subscription (see FAQ).
What you actually get
An AI-extracted acapella is the lead vocal estimated from the full mix. It is not the studio vocal recording, so it can contain faint instrument traces, and effects such as reverb or delay that were baked into the song come along with the voice. For practice, mashups, transcription and learning harmonies this is usually plenty. For a release-quality sample you should still ask for the original multitrack.
Tips for best results
- Dry, centred vocals extract best. Heavy reverb, doubled vocals and wide stereo effects leave more artefacts.
- Prefer lossless sources. Starting from WAV, FLAC or ALAC avoids stacking compression artefacts on top of separation artefacts.
- Dense, loud mastering is hardest. Cymbals and synths sharing the vocal frequency range can leak into the vocal stem; listen on headphones before using it.
- Harmonies are kept together. Lead and backing vocals usually stay in the same stem, since there is no separate backing-vocals stem.
- Check the ends. Trim off the first and last second if you hear a leftover click or breath of the intro.
Acapella, instrumental and stems: what is the difference?
An acapella is the vocals only. An instrumental is everything except the vocals, which is what karaoke uses. Stems are the separate parts of the song. Riftone gives you all six, so one separation covers all three needs.
Frequently asked questions
How do I extract an acapella from a song on iPhone?
Import the song into an AI stem-separation app such as Riftone, wait for the split, then keep only the Vocals stem and export it as a separate track or as an audio mix.
Can I get an acapella for free?
You can download Riftone for free and try separation on the demo tracks. Separating your own songs needs Riftone Premium, an auto-renewing subscription. The weekly plan includes a 3-day free trial; the price is shown in the app before you subscribe, and you can cancel any time in iPhone Settings. You can try the built-in demo tracks without paying.
Is an extracted acapella the same as the studio vocal?
No. It is an AI estimate of the vocal from the finished mix, so it may include faint instrument traces and the song's reverb. It is good for practice, mashups and learning, but not a replacement for the original multitrack.
Does the acapella include backing vocals?
Usually lead and backing vocals stay together in the Vocals stem. There is no separate backing-vocals stem.
Why do I hear echo or traces of drums in the vocal?
Reverb and delay were mixed into the song and travel with the voice, and loud cymbals or synths can leak. It is most noticeable on dense, heavily mastered tracks. Clean studio recordings give a cleaner result.
Which export formats are available?
M4A (default), and lossless WAV on iPhone. You can export the Vocals stem alone under Separated tracks.
Can I use the acapella in my own release?
Only with permission from the rights holders of the song. Personal practice, study and private remixes are generally fine; publishing or selling derived tracks is not without a licence.
Can I change the key or tempo of the acapella?
Yes. Pitch shifts up to 12 semitones either way and tempo is changed independently, which is handy for matching an acapella to another track.
